Fall Fashion: Last Minute Halloween DIYs

Halloween is literally right around the corner (and if you’re in college, Halloweekend starts tonight), and even though I’m pretty sure I have no plans for Halloweekend whatsoever, I can’t stop perusing Pinterest, looking for the cutest (and easiest) costume DIYs.

DIY costumes are great because they’re unique and work double time as a conversation starter. A few years ago, I made myself a cupcake costume out of cardboard and I totally loved it. Granted, I think I was in the eighth grade and have not done anything nearly as creative for Halloween in the years since, but I can still dream.

Here’s a throwback to my favorite DIY Halloween costume, featuring my mom (left) and my Aunt Niki (right). All I did to make my costume was cut two cupcake shapes out of cardboard (there’s one behind me, too), cover the bottom with tin foil where the cupcake liner would be and paint on pink frosting with leftover paint I found in my garage. Then, I cut out little cardboard sprinkles and two cherries and colored them with markers, attaching them to the cardboard with velcro (though, in retrospect, I should’ve used hot glue). I used twine to attack the two cupcake sides and put it over my shoulders.

For those of you who have also procrastinated your costume making, take a look at some of my favorite cheap and easy DIYs!

Wednesday Addams

This costume is not only super simple to make, but also totally cool to portray. The look is really all in the makeup and hair: sullen face, dark lips, black braids. Check out this awesome makeup tutorial by YouTube user Madeyewlook Twice, and browse her channel for even more Halloween inspo! The outfit is also simple enough that you probably have all your necessities (black dress or shirt/skirt combo and black shoes) right in your closet. Just pick up some black tights and a white collar and you’re good to go! Honestly, I think the DIY options I’ve seen online are much cuter than the store-bought ones.

Gumball Machine

I am totally obsessed with this idea. I saw this in a couple of places online and it’s so fun and colorful. Basically, you attach a bunch of different colored pom poms to a tank top and pair it with a red skirt. Then, make a construction paper sign that says 25 cents and a little coin slot and voila! Super simple. Keep your makeup sweet and colorful just like your ensemble! Check out this awesome Youtube tutorial by MissRemiAshton to see how to do this (starting at 1:40) and 14 other adorable and easy costumes!

Emoji:

Show off your personality by dressing up as your fave emoji! Even if you don’t have a shirt with heart eyes on it, you can easily get a yellow tee and use fabric markers to draw a face on it. Pair it with a yellow tutu (just like LaurDIY in this video) and you’ve got a fun and flirty outfit! Keep the look casual and simple with comfy white sneakers and easy makeup.

Popcorn

Here’s another look I’m totally obsessed with. I love that it’s quirky and fun, but also classy and sort of old fashioned. All you really need is a red and white skirt/dress (or a red or white skirt you can paint the opposite color on), some computer paper, a yellow marker and a hot glue gun. Take a look at Studio DIY’s cool and easy step-by-step tutorial for this costume, and don’t forget to rock a classic red lip!

I hope that these DIY ideas have inspired you to make your own last minute costume this weekend! Let me know if you test out one of the ideas, and Tweet me pictures of your costumes! Have a happy and safe Halloweekend, everyone!

Toni

Winter Style: Holiday Look #4: Shaggy Faux Fur Vest

Hey guys, welcome back! With New Years’ Eve right around the corner, I’m going to try to squeeze in some last minute outfit ideas! Hope you guys enjoy, and don’t forget to check out my first three ideas for more inspiration!

Shaggy Faux Fur Vest

I love faux fur vests because they look luxe and posh but are definitely affordable and guilt-free. They can keep you warm and score you major style points. For this look, I would look for one that has fur that is more hairy and flowy than clumpy, just because it makes it stick out more. I would also choose a lighter white or off-white to add an ethereal look to the ensemble.

Long Sleeve Crop Top

To keep this ensemble winter-appropriate but still cute and fresh, I would pair the vest with a long sleeved crop top in a dark color like maroon or black. This will create contrast with the vest but not steal any attention away from it.

black long sleeve crop top lulu's

Patchwork Skinny Jeans

To add to the cool, urban vibe of the outfit, I would pair this outfit with a pair of skinny jeans with patches and rips. It definitely adds some cool factor and street cred to your outfit, and keeps your outfit sleek and perfect for the season.

Shoes

To add some glam elements to this outfit, I would pair it with high heeled booties in a taupe or beige color. They add some height and high fashion to your outfit, and the neutral color ties the whole outfit together.

Accessories

To further add to the glam look, I would pair the outfit with a snakeskin clutch and a multilayer necklace. This will add some shine to your outfit, as well as some eye-catching details.

Back to School: Look #3: High-Waisted Jeans

When it’s time for school to start, I try to give my summer wardrobe an update by pairing items with pieces for fall. In this outfit, I’ll do just that to make an ensemble that is fun, cool and school appropriate! Hope you like it!

High-Waisted Jeans

I love high-waisted jeans so much. They flatter my small waist and are just comfortable. I just got an awesome new pair from Annie Sez (that I couldn’t find online) that hit my tiniest point. They’ve got four buttons and have a very classic silhouette, but they’re acid wash, so they’re super fun and flattering. If you don’t feel comfortable with a cool acid wash print, look for something with a dark rinse.

Crop Top

The awesome part about wearing high-waisted jeans? You can wear ultra cute crop tops without worrying about showing too much midriff. Crop tops draw attention to a small waist and show a little bit of skin without being too scandalous. Just make sure they’re not against your school dress code before wearing one! If you’re wearing a pair of acid wash jeans, I would stick to something solid but not boring, like this cute cutout crop top from Aéropostale. If you’re feeling brave, pair your jeans with a patterned crop top. Just make sure the tops have at least one similar color so they don’t clash, but avoid being matchy-matchy (unless it’s intentional!) If you’re going with a simple pair of plain blue jeans, pair them with a cute floral crop top to bring a bit of summer to the hallways!

(Tip: Let your crop tops air dry so they don’t shrink and become so small that you can’t wear them! That’s unattractive and a waste of money!)

Shoes

For this outfit, I would go with something effortless and simple to keep your outfit grounded and urban. I’d pair this with a pair of slip on shoes or a pair of Converse high tops. That way I’ll be cute and comfortable!

converse hi tops

roxy shoes

Accessories

For this outfit, I’d want to include some super cute and glam accessories. I’d wear a stack of homemade friendship bracelets on one wrist, and a watch and a few bangles and thin bracelets on the other. I would stick with stud earrings to keep attention on your outfit, as well as a few thin rings and one short and one medium length necklace or a layered necklace. This combination will make you look cool, but not like you’re trying too hard.
